Villain is 17/4/2.6 over thousands of hands. I’m only behind JJ/33/x6 here and I am in conflict between my read on the villain’s flop line and read on the turn line. I thought that if this villain flopped a set he would raise on this flop, but at the same time his line on the turn is super strong. I don’t think the villain is three-betting JJ pf so it definitely possible he has it here. Sure, there are a couple of flush draws and a straight draw about, but his turn line doesn’t seem to fit. He could have QQ/KK/AJ I guess, but still seems an odd line to take. It’s a nice board for aces at this point, but I still want to fold? Thoughts?

I can’t see what worse hands he calls me with if I value bet. Given that he nearly timed out calling the river with a set in my other hand with him, I think he is laying down a decent pair of jacks and lower here.

While my post-flop play in this hand kept the pot relatively small and got me to showdown, I don’t feel like I played optimally. Appreciate your thoughts…

The Small Blind in this hand was key, I have a lot of hands with him and he runs about 13/5 with very little pre-flop aggression. The saying goes the 4th bet is always aces, I don’t agree with the saying, but with this opponent in mind I do. Just be open to the possibility that you may have to fold KK every now and then and look for spots where you can narrow your opponents range to aces and pretty much aces only. The most common times I’ve folded KK pre-flop are when there has been multiple players raising before or behind me, or when there is a limp/re-raise all-in involved.

Today I played one of the sharpest sessions I feel like I’ve ever played. I did jsut about everything right, I had a good feel for the tables and was more aggressive than I usually am. leading up to today and even today, I have been getting coolered left, right and centre. Twice it two days I have flopped a set of 5′s on K5x board and run into pocket kings on both occasions. Even so, I had hardly been losing much, which made me feel like I was playing pretty good otherwise. Here is a hand that came up today, it started out as a pre-flop squeeze attempt, turned into an easy c-bet against a passive player and then turned into a river bluff. Here is the hand and my thoughts on every street….

Villain is 19/7/0.61, so passive as anything. We’ve played a lot together, they usually respect my bets.

Poker Stars, $1/$2 NL Hold’em Cash Game, 9 Players
UTG: $261.30
UTG+1: $296.55
UTG+2: $473.60
MP1: $107
MP2: $191.55
CO: $120
BTN: $105
SB: $198

Pre-Flop: 7 9 dealt to Hero (BB)
UTG folds, UTG+1 calls $2, UTG+2 calls $2, 3 folds, BTN calls $2, SB folds, Hero raises to $16, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 calls $14, BTN folds

No one really showing any strength at the table, time to turn up the heat on them and raise it up in hopes to pick up the pot right there and then. If it comes to it, generally I’m going to win a high % of the time even if the flop comes because I’m going to be c-betting. I get a call from a passive player, I figure them to have like 22-JJ, suited aces, suited connectors in this spot.

Flop: ($37) 6 2 3 (2 Players)
Hero bets $28, UTG+2 calls $28

Not thrilled about being called, but I think their calling range is wide here in position. An overpair or a draw seem to be the most likely hand at the moment, I think they’d raise with a set on this board.

Turn: ($93) A (2 Players)
Hero checks, UTG+2 checks

The flush gets there, which doesn’t really scare me, the ace doesn’t really scare me though. When I check it is possible for me to have a wide range of hands, including an ace and I’m checking because of the flush scare card. They check behind and I’m nearly certainly firing at the river.

River: ($93) 2 (2 Players)
Hero bets $78, UTG+2 folds

I stay true to my word, I’d be value betting here with an ace and I really don’t think they can call unless they have a slow played flush, or were floating me on the flop with a strong ace and as I said on the flop I think they raise with a set.

Results: $93 Pot ($3 Rake)
Hero mucked 7 9 and WON $90 (+$46 NET)

I was playing too many tables when this pot came up, didn’t realise how deep he was until after I’d thrown out a C-bet on the flop. On reflection I don’t really like c-betting that flop against this villain, even if we weren’t so deep. I’d 3-bet this guy 2 times in the session on another table, so there is a good chance he is calling my 3-bet with a lot of hands, especially since we are so deep.
