Brisbane Lions 2008

With the start of the footy season just a week away I thought it prudent to do a blog about my favourite sporting team of all. The Lions have missed the finals three years in a row now and I’m hoping that we can turn things around and be there in September this year. I think the competition for those spots 4-8 is very very tight and about 10 teams have the potential to slip in there. Consequently, I think our chances hinge on keeping our best side on the park most weeks and winning the close games. If all goes to plan we should be winning a very decent percentage of our home games and that will really see us be competitive.

I’m excited about the list of players we are starting to get, I’m a lot less thrilled about the way we play our football. The game has changed since we won three premierships in a row, new rules have come into the game that make it a lot faster. I really don’t think Leigh Matthews has made the adjustment in playing style that will allow us to beat the best teams going around. I’d love to see more run and carry this year and less possession football. Firstly, stop start football isn’t going to win you a Grand Final and secondly we don’t have the best skills under pressure, resulting in a lot more damaging turnover.
