The Mirage

The Mirage is one of the most famous poker rooms on the strip; it is featured in the 1998 movie Rounders with Matt Damon. The movie is a classic amongst poker players, many of whom credit it for getting them into the game. It was a relatively well run room that by the time I left was packed with people.

I played for seven hours straight, not standing up once, it was a marathon. I really let myself down about halfway through the session. I made a stupid raise and then a stupid call when a guy cam back over the top of me which cost me about $110. At that point I was down to $15 so I re-bought for $200. There was English who just arrived at the table and started raising every hand and playing stupid, that was kind of the catalyst for me losing the $110. He was good value on the rebound though; I got about $50 out of him. I played much more disciplined poker after I was stacked. I made a flush at the river one hand and flopped a set of kings another and I was able to close out the session with a loss of only $50.

There was a guy in the game that looked a lot like me, but older. I hope I can grow stubble like that one day, which was about the only difference in our faces. Funnily enough he was also a Red Sox fan; we had the game on while we were playing. The game went to extra innings and we lost, thankfully didn’t have any money on that one. Tomorrow I have to be up at 6am for the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam bus tour. I think I’m actually looking forward to the Dam more than the Canyon, but it should be a good day of rest anyway.
